In a wonderful island like Bali, it is quite a challenge to find a hidden gem that mass tourism hasn’t discovered yet. I was therefore delighted to find the Tebing Tegallingah temple. We had the ancient temple ruins all to ourselves in the middle of the day.

How we found this hidden gem

When we stayed in a jungle hut at Bali Dacha, a boutique hotel in Bedulu (near Ubud), we asked the staff about places to visit in the area. They recommended the Tebing Tegallingah temple ruins, about a 15-minute walk away from the hotel. These temple ruins were not on our “Bali to-do list” – just because we had never heard of them before – but we are so glad we went.

Also, if you’re looking for a place to stay in Bali, the open jungle huts of Bali Dacha are a very unique experience. Just have a look at our open living room with jungle views, where we enjoyed our morning coffee:

Whereas Google maps suggested a walk through the village, we decided to walk down the Pekerisan river instead. Jordi claims he saw a snake in the grass next to the river. I’m still not sure if he was just trying to scare me, but it’s better to be careful and to keep an eye out when you take this route.

We came across many beautiful landscapes while walking down the river, here is just a few of them:

To reach the temple, we had to go down a long stairway. At the end of the stairs, there is a small bridge crossing the river. The temple ruins are on both sides of the bridge.

The Tebing Tegallingah temple ruins are not very well known, but they definitely offer some excellent photo opportunities. We felt lucky to have a beautiful place like this all to ourselves.
