Best places to watch the sunset in Mykonos – Greece (with map)

Watching the sunset at Armenistis Lighthouse in Mykonos, Greece

If you love a sunset by the sea, then Mykonos island will definitely not disappoint. In this post I am sharing the best places to watch the sunset in Mykonos…

PS: Are you planning a romantic getaway to Mykonos with your loved one? Check out these unforgettable things to do in Mykonos, especially for couples.

Map of the best sunset spots in Mykonos

I think we’ve watched the sunset from pretty much every corner of Mykonos island where the sunset is visible. So it’s probably a good idea to show on the map where the best sunset spots in Mykonos are:

Armenistis Lighthouse

It wasn’t until our last night in Mykonos that we went to watch the sunset at the Armenistis Lighthouse, but it definitely turned out to be my favourite spot.

Although the Armenistis Lighthouse is normally a 20 minute drive from Mykonos Town, it’s better to leave some room for slow traffic. There was only one car ahead of us, but it was driving unbelievably slow and there was no opportunity for us to overtake. So in the end it was a bit tight, but we made it on time for the sunset.

It actually gets very chilly and windy at the lighthouse around sunset, so it’s a good idea to bring layers with you. I took off my layers for the pictures only.

Also, there are many different angles from which you can take pictures with the lighthouse, here are a few from far and from close. The further away from the lighthouse, the easier it is to capture the sunset:

As soon as you have your lighthouse pictures, it is time to just admire the colours in the sky and the sea:

PS: Parking at the Armenistis Lighthouse is free, and so is taking pictures around the lighthouse πŸ™‚

Boni's Windmill (Mykonos Town)

Boni’s Windmill in Mykonos Town is the perfect place for a very typical Mykonos sunset. The windmill is located on a mountain and overlooks Mykonos Town, while the sun sets in the sea behind the town.

Most people watch the sunset from right next to Boni’s windmill, or from the rooftop next to it. But when you cross the road and climb up the mountain a bit further, you will get pictures with the windmill itself included:

If you’re not staying in Mykonos Town, there is free parking available at the Old Port, from where you can walk to Boni’s Windmill.

Divounia Beach Viewpoint

We’re always up for an adventure, so when we saw a hill from Kalafati Beach we decided to go and watch the sunset from there. That hill turned out to be next to Divounia Beach, and it has amazing views.

We were literally the only people climbing the hill to watch the sunset from there, so it was a very natural spot. We even encountered a family of rabbits on the hill. As you can probably tell from my hair in the pictures, you should be prepared for some heavy winds and hold any loose items like sunglasses:

You won’t be able to see the sun set in the sea – it sets behind some other mountains – but the views are still pretty sweet.

Agios Ioannis beach

Agios Ioannis beach was just within walking distance from our apartment (FOS Suites – affiliate link), so we watched our first Mykonos sunset from there:

Agios Ioannis beach is quieter than most beaches on the island, and it’s allowed to sunbathe on your own towels – so no need to pay for expensive Mykonos sunbeds.

Scorpios

Scorpios is the only place in Mykonos where we went and had to pay to watch the sunset. It is a club, but you can make it as cheap or expensive as you like. For the expensive way, you can book aΒ  sunbed on their beach and splash out on drinks.Β

For the cheap way, you can just order a beer and bring your own towels to hide around the corner of the beach (where there are no sunbeds):

The sea views with yachts are pretty spectacular, so definitely worth the beer (even if you’re travelling on a budget)…Β
