Magical sunrises in Cappadocia

Watching the hot air balloon from Goreme viewpoint in Cappadocia

If there’s one thing in Cappadocia worth waking up early for, it’s the magical hot air balloon sunrises. In this post I am sharing where and at what time you can find the best sunrises in Cappadocia.

The hot air balloons in Cappadocia take off as early as 5am, and the last hot air balloons are up in the air until about 7am. To watch a skyline filled with hot air balloons, 5:30am – 6:30am is your lucky hour!

These are the best places to watch Cappadocia’s magical sunrises from:

Hotel balconies

By far the easiest way to watch the Cappadocia sunrises is from your hotel’s balcony. Even on a lazy morning, you could just pop out of your room in pyjamas and go back to bed afterwards.

So when you book a hotel in Cappadocia, make sure it has these spectacular sunrise views in the morning. Here are a few mornings we had in The Village Cave House hotel (Goreme):

The balconies in the pictures are all shared balconies for hotel guests, but we had no other guests on the balconies when we visited the hotel in May.

Goreme viewpoint

The Goreme viewpoint is located on a hill, so it has amazing views over Goreme town. If you visit the Goreme viewpoint in the early morning, you’ll be surrounded by hot air balloons.

Although this option requires you to get dressed, it is still an easy option as it’s just a short walk up the hill from Goreme. The views are definitely worth it:

As shown in the picture above, the viewpoint is also worth a visit in the evening, when the city lights of Goreme go on.

No morning in Cappadocia is the same, and one morning we got really lucky. We were just busy taking our pictures when we suddenly heard the friendliest voice saying “Good Morning!” from the sky.Β

Almost like an angel, the driver of a hot air balloon told us he was taking lessons on how to drive the hot air balloon, and he wanted to be in our pictures. Of course we couldn’t say no to this opportunity:

The sky

If you’re brave enough, the sky is a wonderful place to watch the Cappadocia sunrises from. I’ve written a separate post about all you need to know about taking a hot air balloon ride, so I’ll just be sharing the sunrise views from the sky here:

Even if you’re not brave enough to take a hot air balloon ride, the site from which the balloons take off is also a great photo shoot spot.
