If you’re planning a trip to Yogyakarta, you should definitely check out these places to visit. I am sharing my favourite places to visit in Yogyakarta in no particular order, as it’s so difficult to choose between them.Β
Please click on the link if you want to know more about a specific place, as it will lead you to a blog post where I’m sharing more details.
Jomblang cave
The Jomblang Cave was by far the most adventurous place we visited in Yogyakarta. It all started with a 60-meter vertical descend while hanging on a single rope. We then had to walk through a slippery, dark and muddy cave, before we got to the point where the sun rays enter the cave. Watching the sun rays shining through the darkness of the cave was a magical experience, and definitely worth all the adventure.
Borobudur temple
Watching the sunrise at the Borobudur temple requires an early wake-up, but it is so worth it. We arrived at the Borobudur temple in complete darkness, and slowly saw the trees coming out of the fog as the sun rose.
Kedung Kandang waterfall
Kedung Kandang is one of those places that really surprised me, as it had a lot more to offer than I was expecting based on my research.
While I was expecting to see a waterfall, I had no idea about the most wonderful rice fields that surround the waterfall.
Best of all? We had the place all to ourselves, so it hasn’t been discovered by tourists yet…
Pinus Pengger forest
With all its cute photo setups, Pinus Pengger forest is a true Instagrammer’s paradise. Pinus Pengger forest offers plenty of photo opportunities at any time of the day, but it is an extra magical place during sunset.
Prambanan Temple
The Prambanan temple is the biggest Hindu temple site in Indonesia. While lots of tourists and locals visit the main temple, I was surprised to find out we were the only ones at the Candi Sewu temple. Both are temples are not to be missed when in Yogyakarta.
Planning your visit with these 2 day trips
To help you organising your visit to my favourite places in Yogyakarta, I have put them together into two day trips.
Day trip 1 - Borobudur sunrise, Mount Merapi Jeep ride and Prambanan temple
Day trip 1 was off to an early start with a 4 am pick up, to watch the sunrise in the Borobodur temple. We then went to the Prambanan temple, and added an extra stop for a jeep ride at Mount Merapi.
For this day trip, we paid our private driver IDR 470K (approx. Β£28). This price does not include tips, entrance to the Borobudur and Prambanan temples and the jeep ride at Mount Merapi.
Day trip 2 - Jomblang Cave, Kedung Kandang and sunset at Pinus Pengger
Day trip 2 started with a 7 am pick up, in order to arrive at the Jomblang cave on time. The Jomblang cave adventure takes about half day, so we spent rest of the afternoon in Kedung Kandang and watched the sunset from Pinus Pengger. This day trip took about 14 hours in total.
For this day trip, we paid our private driver IDR 550K (approx. Β£32) for 14 hours. This price does not include tips, the Jomblang cave adventure and entrance to Pinus Pengger forest.
