Watching the sunrise at Borobudur Temple

We spent our first morning in Yogyakarta watching the sunrise at Borobudur temple. What a magical sunrise that was – we couldn’t have wished for a better start of our Indonesian trip.

How to get there

When we visited in December, the sunrise started as early as 6 am. Therefore, the best way to get there is by arranging a private driver the day before, who will know the exact route and is willing to pick you up early in the morning. We were picked up by our driver at 4 am.

Tickets

Our Borobudur sunrise ticket was 475K Indonesian Rupiah per person, which is around Β£25. The price included access to the temple site, flashlight rental (as we arrived in the pitch-black dark), a luxury breakfast buffet after the sunrise and a souvenir scarf as a gift.

Where to watch the sunrise from

The best way to watch the sunrise is to climb the stairs inside the temple and find a quiet space. As soon as the darkness started to disappear, clouds of fog covered our views. Just as we began to feel disappointed, the sun gained its strength, and the clouds went. Watching the trees come out of the clouds was a spectacular view.

Even after sunrise, we stayed inside the temple to watch the bright blue skies:

After having watched the sunrise, we went to the restaurant for breakfast. At first, we thought that the breakfast buffet was a bit simple, but then we were told that our breakfast was on the first floor of the restaurant. This buffet had a lot more choice, and I had nasi goreng, fresh fruit juice and coffee for breakfast.

With the full day still ahead of us, we went for a jeep ride to mount Merapi and for a visit to the Prambanan Temple.
