Believe me when I say I am not a foodie at all. You will hardly ever see me writing about food or restaurants, but The Rock Restaurant in Zanzibar is so unique that it deserves a post on my blog. A visit to Zanzibar would simply not be complete without having had dinner at The Rock.
When we found out that we would be visiting Zanzibar during the Ramadan, we slightly panicked. We were afraid that The Rock might be one of the restaurants that closes its doors for a month during the Ramadan. I sent out an email to the restaurant on a late Sunday night to check if they would be open. To our relief, we got a response back first thing on Monday morning to confirm that the restaurant will be open as usual. It didn’t take long for us to make a reservation for dinner for two at The Rock.
Upon arrival, we immediately fell in love with the mysterious looks of The Rock, as it is literally a restaurant surrounded by trees on top of a rock in the middle of the sea. We were hoping that the tide would be high because that would mean we would need a boat to get to the restaurant. Unfortunately, the tide was low when we arrived and also when we left so that we could reach the restaurant on foot.
After we took our pictures of this wonderful place, we climbed the stairs to enter the restaurant and to take place at the open-air terrace with a local Serengeti beer, while we waited to be seated inside the restaurant. The food was fresh and tasty, with most of the ingredients locally sourced in Zanzibar and cooked in Swahili style. A dinner here is quite pricey compared to the other restaurants we’ve been to in Zanzibar, but it was definitely an experience to never forget and worth the money.
