Sightseeing in Athens
As a couple, we love to explore a new city by sightseeing, so I am sharing our favourite two landmarks in Athens here:Β
Acropolis of Athens
Start your romantic journey at the iconic Acropolis, where you’ll be awestruck by the Parthenon’s majestic presence. Witness the city’s history while taking in breath taking panoramic views of Athens.Β
For an intimate experience, make sure to buy your tickets in advance to skip the queues, and arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds:
If you can’t get enough of the impressive Acropolis, why not book a hotel room with Acropolis views to make your romantic getaway absolutely perfect? Waking up to the views of the Acropolis is the most romantic experience Athens has to offer.
For more tips about how to take the best pictures as a couple at the Acropolis, check out this post.
Ancient Agora
Stroll hand-in-hand through the Ancient Agora, an ancient marketplace. Explore well-preserved ruins like the Temple of Hephaestus and enjoy the serene atmosphere in this historical site.Β
Although the Ancient Agora doesn’t get as crowded as the Acropolis, it is still recommended to book your tickets online in advance to skip the queues. There are also great discounts available when you buy a combination ticket.
We were really impressed with all the different monuments of the Ancient Agora, so this site is well worth a visit!

Romantic Activities
Once you’ve shared the impressive sights and learnt all about the culture and history of Athens, it is time to have some more fun together. How about some food tasting, wine tasting, a boat trip, watching the sunset together, or enjoy a pub crawl? Athens has it all!Β
Food Tasting
Athens is a food lover’s paradise. Savour traditional Greek cuisine at charming tavernas. Share a meze platter, indulge in moussaka, or satisfy your sweet tooth with baklava. Don’t forget to try some Greek wine for a complete culinary experience.
Or if you’re looking for a more active culinary experience in Athens, why not join a Greek cooking class or food tour?
Cooking together is a great bonding activity for couples, and after a local cooking class you can even enjoy Greek food back at home.
Wine Tasting
Discover the world of Greek wine by embarking on a wine-tasting adventure. The lights of Acropolis at night offer the perfect backdrop for a romantic date, sampling exquisite wines together.
We sure loved sharing a bottle of Greek wine and the accompanying cheese plate in Athens. It would have been even more romantic with the Acropolis in the background though:
Boat Trip
If you’re visiting Athens in the summer season, why not set sail in the Aegean Sea with a boat tour. Explore picturesque islands like Aegina or Hydra, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and savour a delicious picnic on board. These are all group tours, so maybe not as romantic as a private boat tour, but some boats have VIP seating available for a more luxurious experience.
Watch the sunset together
Witnessing the Athenian sunset with your loved one is a must. Head to Lycabettus Hill or the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion to watch the sun dip below the horizon.
Pub Crawl
After watching the sunset, enjoy Athens’ vibrant nightlife with a pub crawl. Explore the city’s bustling bars and clubs, making new friends along the way. Dance the night away in each other’s arms.
I highly recommend choosing a pub crawl that visits the rooftop bars at Monastiraki Square, the views at night are so worth it:
Add to your bucket list:
Day Trips from Athens
Athens can be seen in just a couple of days, so if you have time to spare, why not go on a day trip together? Unfortunately we didn’t have time to take any day trips from Athens, but these ones are definitely on our bucket list:
Meteora
Embark on a magical day trip to Meteora, where monasteries perched atop towering rock formations create a surreal atmosphere. Explore the monasteries and enjoy the stunning natural scenery.
Delphi
Delve into ancient Greek mythology by visiting Delphi. Discover the Temple of Apollo, the ancient theater, and the Delphi Archaeological Museum. The scenic drive to Delphi is a romantic experience in itself.
Ancient Corinth
Travel to Ancient Corinth, where history comes alive. Explore the ancient ruins, such as the Temple of Apollo and the Acrocorinth, while admiring breath taking views of the surrounding landscape.
Conclusion
Athens, with its blend of history and romance, offers couples an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re exploring the city’s iconic landmarks, indulging in delectable Greek cuisine, or embarking on exciting day trips, Athens has something for every couple to cherish. Make memories that will last a lifetime in this beautiful city. Plan your romantic getaway to Athens today!
