Going down the Jomblang cave in Java is one of the biggest adventures I have ever experienced. It took me quite a lot of convincing to getΒ JordiΒ to join me, but in the end we are both glad we went. The Jomblang cave is an adventure not to be missed.
All you need to know before you go
If you dare to take on the Jomblang cave adventure, this is all you need to know:
- Arrive before 9 am. There is only one tour per day, and there is a limit on the number of people allowed inside the cave. We didn’t have a reservation, but by arriving before 9 am, we still secured our spots. Our driver picked us up from our hotel at 7 am.
- Bring aΒ flashlight, or make sure that your phone is fully charged. It is pitch black dark inside the cave, so you won’t get far without bringing your light.
- Make sure to bring aΒ spare set of clothes. We both came out of the cave all covered in mud, so a change of clothes was much needed. I’ve never been able to remove the mud from my clothes, so it’s best to bring your old clothes inside the cave.
- Rain boots are included in the ticket price. Just make sure you clean and return them at the end of the tour.
- A visit to the cave takes aboutΒ half a dayΒ and ends around 2 pm with a free lunch.
Descending to the cave
The adventure all started with a vertical 60-meter drop while hanging on a single rope. I have to admit I was feeling a bit nervous about it by the time it was our turn.
After the 60 meter drop, we had to walk down the stairs to get inside the cave:
Inside the cave
Once inside the cave, it is entirely dark and very slippery. I found not being able to see where I walk, combined with the risk of slipping with every step scarier than the 60-meter drop. I also didn’t always manage to avoid the puddles inside the cave, so I ended up being all covered in mud.
However, all the struggles of walking inside the cave were forgotten as soon as I saw the sun rays shining down. It was such a magical and unique sight; I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.
When we got out of the cave, we were lifted back up 60 meters with the single rope. At the end of the cave tour, it was time to shower and have a change of clothes. After we were both cleaned up, we enjoyed our free lunch box.Β
