Sleeping in a tent in Yosemite’s Camp Curry while being surrounded by bears was very memorable. We didn’t sleep very well because of all the noises at night, but it is definitely worth the unique experience.
Camp Curry (now called Half Dome village)
After we had stayed in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, we thought it would be a nice change to sleep in nature. When we arrived at Camp Curry, we were welcomed by a lot of housekeeping rules. The most important rule being not to bring anything that smells sweet inside the tent, including toiletries. Every tent has its own locker just outside for sweet-smelling things and food.
The tent itself was very basic with just a bed and some space to leave our food free suitcases. Toilets and showers are shared, and any food is to be eaten in the restaurant area of the camp. At least we had electricity in the tent to charge our phones.
Despite all the bear warning signs all over the camp – which added some sense of adventure – we had not actually seen any bears during our stay here. I am still not sure if I should feel lucky or disappointed about that. We heard a lot of noise at night, but considering that we were in a tent in the middle of a forest, that could have been anything.
How to spend your time here
Leaving the tent in the morning and being in the middle of Yosemite Park makes the camping experience all worthwhile. We easily spent the full day walking around this beautiful national park while enjoying its various landscapes. Expect to see waterfalls, forests and rocks.
After our second night in Camp Curry, we drove for about 3.5 hours to see Sequoia National Park. I had never seen such immense trees in my life as the Sequoia tree – so impressive! One tree was even cut into a tunnel.
