Bongoyo island in Tanzania

On our very last day in Tanzania, we stayed in a hotel close to Dar es Salaam’s Oyster Bay, from where we took a short ferry ride to Bongoyo Island. This gorgeous island with its quiet beach was the perfect spot to relax after all our safari adventures and before heading back to London.

As if the idyllic beach on this island is not enough reason to visit, it also offers a stroll through the woods to get to a lagoon surrounded by rock formations. Locals warned us that dangerous fishermen could be hiding in the woods. Maybe we got lucky that we didn’t come across any, but it’s always good to be aware of your surroundings.

To visit this fantastic spot from Dar es Salaam, you will need to pay for the ferry and a small entrance fee to enter the island. The ferry departs from the “Slipway” ferry terminal which was within 5-minute walking distance from the DoubleTree Oyster Bay hotel in which we stayed. Bongoyo Island is the perfect day trip from Dar es Salaam and definitely a hidden gem at the same time.
