What to expect from Husky Sledding in Finnish Lapland as a Couple
To be fully prepared for your husky sledding adventure as a couple, this is all you need to know:
Add to your bucket list:
What to Wear: Dressing for the Arctic Cold
As you embark on your husky sledding adventure, ensuring you’re properly dressed for the Arctic chill is paramount. Prepare to bundle up in layers to combat the freezing temperatures.
During our husky sledding safari, we were provided with specialized overalls, boots, and gloves to shield us from the icy temperatures. Beneath the provided gear, we wore our own ski pants, thermal underwear, and fleece jumpers for added warmth.
Don’t forget to accessorize with ear warmers and a fleece neck warmer to keep those chilly gusts at bay. You could even wear your own gloves underneath the provided gloves for an extra layer of warmth.
Instructions for the Journey: Mastering the Husky Sled
Before setting off, you’ll receive thorough instructions on manoeuvring the husky sled.
As a couple, one of you will have the thrilling opportunity to drive the sled while the other revels in the breath-taking scenery from the comfortable seat inside the sled. But don’t worry, halfway through the sledding tour you’ll get the opportunity to switch roles if you want to.
You can only control the sled’s speed by stepping on the brake with one foot to slightly slow down the huskies or with both feet for a standstill; steering is left to the expertly trained huskies (or so we were told).
Adhere to safety protocols by maintaining a minimum distance from other sleds, not overtaking other sleds, assisting the dogs uphill by pushing and running behind the sled, and ensuring tension on the line between the sled and the lead dogs.
The designated “Musher” cannot capture photos, so the passenger takes on the role of photographer, capturing every magical moment. One of the tour guides also took pictures of us during the break in the middle of the tour when we got to switch roles.
Sled Ride: A Thrilling Ride Through a Winter Wonderland
Embark on an adventure like no other as the huskies dash through the pristine Lapland snowscapes. Despite not having any prior husky sledding experience, guiding the sled was surprisingly intuitive, with experienced tour guides accompanying us on snowmobiles for added assurance.
Our huskies, brimming with energy, occasionally outpaced the sled ahead, necessitating gentle braking to maintain distance. The scenery, a tableau of snowy enchantment, unfolded before us, evoking feelings of both adventure and whimsy. As we navigated the snowy trails, the huskies’ enthusiasm was palpable, infusing the experience with an infectious sense of joy.
Our journey was punctuated by unexpected delights, including a chance encounter with a group of wild reindeer, immortalised in photographs and videos captured by the passenger. Here’s a picture I took of the wild reindeer we encountered:
Amidst the adventure, there was a momentary detour as our huskies opted for a different path, requiring swift action to re-join the group. Of course this happened when I was the Musher, so I had to push the brake hard to get to a standstill, and pull the sled backward with the help of one of the tour guides. Two other guides led our huskies back to the group. Huskies leaving the group didn’t happen to anyone else in our group, so this must have been a rare occurrence.
Jordi took the opportunity to capture this funny moment (as the passenger of the sled there was nothing else he could do to help):
The tour guides immediately noticed when our huskies left the group and shouted clear instructions to me before they reached us and helped me get our sled back in the group, so at no point did we feel unsafe. The experience, though momentarily unexpected, added to the thrill and spontaneity of the adventure.Β
End of the Ride: Farewell to our Furry Friends
As our sled ride concluded, we bid farewell to the magnificent husky pack that had whisked us through the wintry wonderland. Their boundless energy and enthusiasm had made our journey truly unforgettable.
Warm Up in a Kota: Cozy Moments by the Fire
After an exhilarating ride, seek refuge from the chill in a traditional Kota tent. Gather around a crackling fire and indulge in the warmth of traditional Glogi, a hot berry juice that will warm you to the core. Relish the opportunity to reflect on the day’s adventures and bask in the romance of the Arctic wilderness.
